THE DOWN LOW

What are some of those sayings? Even a blind squirrel sometimes finds a nut, or leave a monkey at a typewriter long enough and he’ll eventually type a word. Point being that even those ignorant in a particular situation can find success. I’ve never compared myself to squirrels or monkeys, but ignorance is no stranger. Chasing great barbecue means entering unfamiliar joints and hoping for the best. When that tiny joint delivers the best of the best, it’s thrilling!

Batmarr and I were greeted by such an experience on a trip to Decatur. Decatur has a legitimate claim on being the center of the Alabama barbecue universe. It’s hard visiting the River City and choosing which joint to visit. Our visit was exploratory, looking for another joint that could bolster an already stacked line-up. I’d seen Scruggs before, a simple, weathered structure in an industrial, very blue-collar area. The parking lot was always full, which caught my attention as hard working folk don’t give their money to something that isn’t worthwhile. Plus, there’s the enormous smoker outside that looks like a retired submarine. Anyone that needs a smoker the size of a war machine must be in demand.

The building is modest but themed. Red, white and blue are the foundation for tasteful messages of God and country adorning the walls. Affirmations of faith are the perfect accompaniment for a good plate of food. While thoughtful, the décor was understated, which is not how I’d describe our server. She was happy, attentive, and bantered with us every time she checked in. She brought a smile to our faces and was simply a delight. Her personality alone is reason enough to return.

When you go someplace for the food, it has to be the star. For us, the brisket not only stole the show but ran away with it. It was fall apart tender, flavorful, and crazy moist. It reminded me of Grandma’s roast in a way. Rich and fatty, smoky and decadent, it also had a flavorful crust that made the tastebuds sing! There was plenty of it too. One thing’s for certain; Scruggs doesn’t hold back on portion sizes.

The pulled pork had a deep, smoky flavor but it was better with sauce. The two on the table were a thick, sweet, mild red sauce and a thin white sauce that was sharp and peppery. Both were quite simple.

My favorite side was the baked beans. They were sweet and hearty, stewed in a tomato-based sauce with bell peppers and meat. They were a meal on their own. The potato salad was cool and peppery with relish and some welcome pimentos. The mac n cheese and turnip greens were both fine and everything was happily finished. Then there was the cornbread. A thick slice that was absolutely lovely! Coarse, creamy, and buttery with a crispy crust on the bottom and crumble that only a fine craftsman can accomplish, that cornbread was made with love.
